If you plan on having a fire during your camping trip you’ll want a method for gathering firewood. You’ll want something that will cut through various size limbs and trees to ensure that you can gather kindling for starting your fire as well as larger pieces of wood.

Both the pocket survival chainsaw and Gerber’s 14 inch hatchet are great ways to always be prepared.

Comparison

The hatchet has a lightweight composite handle with a forged steel blade, the perfect size for splitting medium to smaller sized logs. The chain on the pocket saw is a high strength carbon steel that allows fast cutting while its handles are a strong nylon.

With the proper care, these two products will last and stand the test of time . The hatchet is easier to take care of, you can simply scrub and sharpen it and it will be good as new. To increase the life of your saw you will want to lubricate it every once in awhile.

In addition to the 14 inch hatchet, Gerber also has a 9 and a 17.5 inch hatchet, all can easily be attached to your hiking backpack. The pocket chainsaw takes the win on the weight; it is just under 5 ounces in comparison to the 2 pound hatchet. Both items are reasonably priced and are both are covered under warranty for manufacture issues.

My method of gathering firewood

It really comes down to your personal preference. Whichever you decide on, you will be able to finish the job at about the same rate. I always have my hatchet strapped to my backpack and mainly use it for convenience. My portable saw stays with my emergency gear, which I keep on me anytime I leave the base camp.  So if I ever become separated or lost I can use it to build shelter and get my fire going.
