Many would argue that taking a generator camping is cheating or that it defeats the purpose. I agree with that to some extent, you won’t catch me camping with one in the summertime. Winter is a slightly different story however.
I spent my winters, what should have been my high school years, camping out in the rv parking lot at any ski mountain from Whistler Canada to Brighton, Utah. My 1990 Mini-Wini has seen it all, but not without the help of a Honda Generator. My solo trips would have been out of the question if I didn’t have a reliable, lightweight generator that I could manage myself.
Honda Generator EU2000I Specs
Honda went with the Honda GX100 for the engine on this model which is really quiet. I have been using the EU2000I for years, even through freezing temperatures in the middle of a blizzard. I’ve never had a problem with my Honda, just chain it up to the back of the RV and plug in. even with it so close you can hardly hear it.
The Honda generator is very compact, 11.4 inches x 20.13 inches x 16.75 inches and only weighs about 45 pounds. Being so lightweight makes the generator ideal for your emergency supply as well. In my RV I’m able to power the onboard propane heater, fridge, microwave, oven, tv/xbox, and all of the lights with this one generator. I just fill the tank before I fall asleep and it lasts all night so I don’t have to wake up freezing in the morning. You can pick one up for about $1000 on Amazon, for how much I use mine it is definitely worth it. The generator includes a three year warranty even though you probably won’t need it. The on off switch, choke, and pull start make this generator extremely easy for anyone to figure out.
Tips
Make sure that give the manual a quick look over to make certain that you know what everything is for. Make sure that you are using the “ECO Throttle” system for running your generator at night. Doing so will help your fuel last longer. It may need to be run at full power if you are running a lot of items at once. If you are using it on snow, the exhaust will melt the snow exposing the ground below. I keep an old rug in the side compartment of my RV to place the generator on, thus preventing it sinking into the mud below, helping it stay clean.
