Two way radios, also known as “walkie talkies”, are a great way to get a hold of the other members of your group when you are separated in the great outdoors. I do a good amount of back-country tree skiing and as a kid I remember always having my “walkie talkie” with me in case I took a wrong turn somewhere and needed to call for help. There are a large variety of wilderness outings where having a good set of two way radios can be very beneficial, whether you are skiing, hunting, or simply taking a hike it is always smart to be prepared.

My Favorite Two Way Radios

The Motorola MH230R comes in a pair of two and can spread a distance of over 20 miles. The rechargeable batteries allow you up to 8 hours of use or if you rather, standard batteries (3 AAA) will give you around 10 hours of use. With 11 weather channels and special alert features these definitely come in handy. They have 22 channel options, each with 121 privacy codes for extreme interference protection. What you get with this deal is 2 radios roughly a pound each and a belt clip for both. You also get a dual drop-in charger that can charge both of the batteries at the same time, a charging adaptor, and 2 NiMH rechargeable battery packs.

Accessories

You can purchase some accessories that are very helpful and very reasonably priced at the same time. The G-Shape Clip-Ear Headset/Mic and the Talkabout Case go hand in hand with making your walkie talkies even more efficient. It can be a hassle digging through your pockets to get to your radio.  By using the headset you will be able to respond instantly. In addition to the extra protection, the case has a carabiner for quick release.   It also has a built-in belt Velcro loop which lets you hook it just about anywhere. The case is compatible with the headset so you don’t have to sacrifice extra protection for convenience, you can have the whole package.
